Rural communities such as Bhadoi and Pilibhit dsitricts in Uttar Pradesh have extreme potential to create world class marketable products, but have not yet realized their market value due to quality problems and market access, among other limitations. Against this background, the Government of Uttar Pradeh in the leadership of Mr. Yogi is committed to assist its efforts to launch the so-called One District One Product (ODOP) movement to promote small local businesses and, therefore, improve the livelihoods of local residents.
UP Govt. should establish provincial ODOP committees, in parallel with the nationwide enthusiasm for ODOP, with the Department of Industry and Commerce as the central organization and other provincial departments, district offices and social organizations as participating organizations.
The objective of the project should be to form an implementation system for ODOP projects by developing the capacity of the officials to implement the program. It should also aim to promote community development and gender equality by promoting the participation of women in product development activities. Women play important roles in local markets in Uttar Pradesh: as manufacturers, intermediaries, vendors and consumers. By incorporating their experiences and perspectives into the product development processes, the project sought to provide opportunities for women to participate in social activities to address gender disparities at the community level.
In addition to the development of products and the improvement of product quality, other necessary things such as improve access to finance, marketing, value chain analysis, improve management capacity and leadership is also required.
